Jokes or Self Pity?

Comedy is all about laughter, finding the humor in anything. However, what is the line between comedy and self pity? Sure, there’s the classic jokes directed at yourself, then there’s the “Richard Pryor running down the street” joke that hits hard and successfully.

Which one is better? Personally, I would say the hard hitting jokes. When comedians are able to joke about their personal lives and joke about topics that would make eighty year old conservatives’ mouths drop open, that’s talent. I think the comedians that can make fun of themselves and make fun of their brutal mistakes in life are the ones that have the greatest desire to make others laugh. When a man can make fun of lighting himself on fire in attempt to kill himself after a drug bender, then you know he’s prepared to pull out the guns to make audiences laugh. That’s talent.
